So yesterday all these crazy tents went up across the street from us in a huge field where Phil and I play Frisbee and Bocce. Then this morning a whole lot of people were playing soccer on them - only it was guys and girls, young and old, all sort of playing on the same fields at the same time. None of them were great. We totally didn't get this, so we decided to go investigate.
What we found out once we crossed the street was that we were at the Colorado Special Olympics! It was sweet to see all those people playing sports. The whole event was held at UNC, except aquatics which for some reason was held in Windsor... but since most of it was at UNC, we toured the rest of the university in search of the other events besides soccer.
We found the track and field and spent some time watching people run track and throw shotput (with crazy florescent green balls). It was a fun time. We also found signs for powerlifting, but we never found the event.
To top it all off, tonight they put on a fireworks show right across the street from our house! Someone we talked that afternoon had tipped us off to this great thing, and we watched them from the comfort of our lawn.
I guess the CO SO will be held here for a few more years, so if we keep renting here for awhile, we'll be enjoying this at the end of every May. If someone tells us it's happening, we might even volunteer.
